Villa Romana de Rio Verde (Calle del Rio, Marbella) – located close to Puerto Banus, this is the remains of a 1st to 2nd century AD Roman era home. The highlight of a visit here is the impressive Roman mosaics, which depict mostly culinary and religious imagery. These mosaics are comprised of intricate patterns of black and white tiles and have survived in truly excellent condition.
Note: this site is surrounded by a fence and only open on Thursday mornings between 11.00 and 13.00 all year, with a guided tour – except the week of July 7 and public holidays. You can arrange other visiting times by telephoning Marbella’s Culture Dept.: +34 952 82 50 35. You can however view the site through the fence during daylight and there are signs with information about the site.
